Why Choose 5K and 8K Resolutions?

Remember when 1080p was the newest technology and we were blown away at the quality? Then, seemingly overnight, we were introduced to 4K. These days, the newest resolution terms are 5k and 8k but what are they exactly? Let’s take a closer look at each.

Measuring 5120 x 2880 pixels, 5K resolution is in many ways becoming the standard resolution for many high-end monitors, TVs, and smartphones. While 4k is the standard for many products, this is mainly due to price. 5K monitors, for the most part, are on the expensive side. As time goes on, these will become more affordable and become more common.

What is 5k2k resolution? In short, a 5k2k monitor has the horizontal resolution of a 5K monitor and the vertical resolution of a 4K display.

Having more pixels than the standard versions makes it impressive for the creators who are expecting great visuals. Whereas 8K is the literal definition of what next-gen is. 8k monitors with 7680 x 4320 pixels are a great pick for graphic designers and gamers.

While there aren’t many options available as of now, manufacturers are starting to develop monitors for 8K, but the problem is that there is a lack of tech to support the resolution. A suitable graphics chip to handle the resolution isn’t available yet. Measuring 7680 x 4320 pixels, 8K resolution is at the upper limit of what’s distinguishable by our eyes. Anything higher and we wouldn’t be able to tell.

If you’re like us, having an image to see what the difference is works better. Take a look at the graphic below to get a better idea of the differences in the resolutions.

Display Resolution Comparison

How to Choose a 5K or 8K Monitor?

With 5K monitors (5120 x 2880 pixels), you will usually find them in two aspect ratios: 16:9 and 21:9 or above. The latter ones are ultrawide monitors, which deliver a fantastic multi-monitor experience on a single screen. However, monitors with a regular 16:9 aspect ratio are better for graphic designing, as you can view precise details of images. While you won’t find accurate pixel scaling with ultra-wide monitors, they are perfect for video editing.

With 8K monitors (7680 x 4320 pixels), you don’t have a lot of choices to worry about as there are only a few out there—and probably only one affordable piece with exceptional features – Dell UltraSharp UP3218K.

Resolution 5,120 x 2,880
Brightness 500 nits
Viewing angle 178/178
Contrast ratio 1200:1

It can be tough to find a good monitor that you can use to connect a MacBook and unless Apple seriously drops the price on their Pro Display XDR, the closest option you’re going to find is the Ultrafine from LG. The 27-inch 5k monitor displays everything beautifully with its 5K resolution with color support of 99% DCI-P3 and a contrast ratio of 1200:1. It has three USB-C downstream ports and a single USB-C port that allows you to transmit 5K video and data while also charging your MacBook.

If you’re after a larger screen size, we recommend the 34″ LG 34BK95U-W UltraFine.

Pros

Cons

➕ Incredible image quality ➖ Poor dark scene performance
➕ Great viewing angles ➖ No adaptive sync
➕ Beautifully built ➖ No variable refresh rate
➕ User-friendly menus ➖ HDR peak brightness is not high enough for watching HDR movies

In addition, the included Display Manager software from Dell helps make it easier to utilize the huge display by letting you manage up to six windows at one time.

The best monitor for minimalists

Screen size: 34-inch | Aspect ratio: 21:9 | Resolution: 5,120 x 2,160 | Brightness: 600 nits | Response time: 5ms | Viewing angle: 178/178 | Contrast ratio: 1200:1 | Color support: DCI-P3 98% | Weight: 16.5lbs

With an aspect ratio of 21:9, the Ultrafine 34″ monitor from LG defines minimalism with its design. Image quality isn’t affected, regardless of where you’re sitting thanks to the monitor’s 178-degree viewing angle. The monitor can handle all of your peripherals with a DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3 port as well as two HDMI and USB ports. The display shines with its native 5K2k resolution and comes with HDR support to make every project you’re working on look its absolute best. For all of this tech, you would believe the price would be astronomical but it is very affordable.

If you’re wondering the differences between 5k and 5k2k, in short, a 5k2k monitor has the horizontal resolution of a 5K monitor and the vertical resolution of a 4K display because of the 21:9 aspect ratio.

Pros

Cons

➕ Image remains accurate ➖ Poor dark scene performance
➕ Large screen with excellent resolution

With best-in-the-industry color reproduction, the overall build quality is superb and the overall weight of the monitor is surprisingly light. The only downside? The cost. 5. Dell U4021QW

Dell U4021QW
Dell U4021QW. Image credits: Dell / Amazon

The best monitor for graphic design

Screen size: 40-inch | Aspect ratio: 16:9 | Resolution: 5120 x 2160 | Weight: 46lbs

The UltraSharp U4021QW 5K display is a standout in Dell’s product line, even though the brand is more for its high-quality laptop releases. It boasts a 40-inch curved UHD display with bezels that are matte silver with some black, giving it a professional appearance.

Although the display has no bezels on three sides, when it is in use, the inner boundaries are still visible. You have room to view all of your work at once with 35% more onscreen space than a 32-inch 4K 16:9 screen.

The Dell U4021QW has a similar solid, well-built feel to many of Dell’s high-end monitors. The stand has a good foundation and stability, so it won’t wobble or slide around even on a glass surface.

Pros

Cons

➕ Large and crisp screen ➖ Expensive
➕ Great monitor for productivity
➕ Vibrant and bright

6. Samsung Odyssey G9

Samsung Odyssey G9
Samsung Odyssey G9. Image credit: Samsung / Amazon

The best ultrawide 5k monitor for gaming

Screen size: 49-inch | Aspect ratio: 32:9 | Resolution: 5,120 x 1,440 | Brightness: 420 nits | Response time: 1ms | Viewing angle: 178/178 | Contrast ratio: 2500:1 | Color support: 125% sRGB, 95% DCI-P3, 92% Adobe RGB, 88% NTSC | Weight: 31.1lbs

To say that the Odyssey G9 from Samsung is massive would be an understatement. At 49 inches, it is an absolute beast, and its 5K resolution and 240Hz refresh rate make it a gamer’s dream. In addition, the amount of real estate that comes with this monitor is stunning, making it easy to do multiple things at once.

However, the most significant thing about this monitor is its overall weight. At 31 pounds, it can weigh as much as some TVs but if you can afford it and have space on your desk, you’ll be blown away by the Odyssey G9 from Samsung. This is our top pick for the best 5k gaming monitor.

Pros

Cons

➕ Wide-screen panel ➖ Poor black uniformity
