Detailed Review of the Best MacBook Pro Alternatives

Here’s what my experience with some of the best laptops comparable to MacBook Pro has been like:

1. HP Envy Business Laptop Best Overall (Editor’s Choice)

Overall best Windows laptop alternative to MacBook Pro

OS: Windows 11 Pro | Display: 17.3″ FHD IPS Touchscreen | CPU: 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700H 14-Core | Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics | RAM: 64GB | Storage: 4TB

As a MacBook Pro user, the HP Envy Business Laptop 2023 is my top choice when it comes to MacBook Pro alternatives. This Windows laptop truly stands out, especially for professionals looking for a powerful and reliable desktop replacement.

From the moment I first powered on the HP Envy, its 17.3″ FHD IPS Touchscreen captivated me. The display is not just large; it’s a vivid canvas, perfect for design work where color accuracy is critical. The 100% sRGB color gamut ensures that what you see on screen is what you get in your final design, a feature I found invaluable during my branding projects.

Under the hood, the HP Envy packs a punch with its 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700H processor and an impressive 64GB DDR4 RAM. This combination offers blistering speeds that are a boon for multitasking. I’ve run multiple design programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator simultaneously without experiencing any lag, a testament to its robust performance.

Storage is another area where this laptop excels. The 4TB SSD is outstanding, offering ample space for large project files and ensuring quick access and saving time. This feature alone has saved me countless hours, allowing me to focus more on creativity and less on managing storage space.

The connectivity options, including Thunderbolt 4 ports, are a major advantage. I’ve found these essential for fast data transfers, especially when working with large design files or when a project demands sharing files quickly with team members.

However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The laptop’s size and weight, at 5.5 lbs, can be a bit cumbersome for those who frequently travel. I’ve often opted for a lighter device for meetings outside the office. Additionally, while the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics is competent for most tasks, it falls short for high-end 3D rendering. In such cases, I’ve had to rely on an external GPU or a desktop setup.

Despite these minor issues, the HP Envy Business Laptop has been a reliable companion in my professional journey. Its blend of power, precision, and practicality makes it a top choice for tech-savvy professionals in the fields of design and branding.

PROS CONS
➕ Powerful Intel Core i9 processor for complex tasks. ➖ High price point.
➕ 16-inch high-resolution display for detailed visuals. ➖ Lacks an Ethernet port.

➕ Durable ThinkPad build quality.

2. ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2023) Best MacBook Alternative for Photo Editing

Best photo editing laptop alternative to Mac

OS: Windows 11 Home | Display: 16″ | CPU: Intel Core i9-13980HX | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 | RAM: 16GB DDR5  | Storage: 1TB PCIe SSD

Next on the list, the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2023) impressed me with its remarkable blend of power and precision, qualities that are essential for content creators who are deeply involved in photo and video editing.

The heart of the Strix G16 is its 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, paired with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. This combination is a powerhouse, ensuring that tasks such as 4K video editing and high-resolution photo processing are handled seamlessly

I remember working on a multi-layered video project on this machine; the experience was smooth, with no lag or stutter, a testament to its robust processing power.

The 16-inch FHD display with a 165Hz refresh rate and covering 100% of the sRGB color space, it’s perfect for video editors and photographers. The color accuracy is also spectacular, ensuring that what you see on screen translates accurately to your final prints. The high refresh rate also means smoother scrolling and cleaner motion in video playback, a feature I found particularly useful during editing sessions.

Multitasking is a breeze on the Strix G16, thanks to its 16GB of DDR5 memory and 1TB PCIe SSD. Running multiple applications, from Photoshop to Premiere Pro, simultaneously without experiencing any slowdown is a huge advantage. The fast SSD ensures quick loading of files, even large video clips, streamlining your workflow.

The ROG Intelligent Cooling system is not just a fancy term but a real asset. During my long editing sessions, the laptop remained cool, preventing any performance hindrance due to overheating. This means you can work for extended periods without worrying about the laptop heating up.

However, it’s important to note a few drawbacks. The battery life is average, which might require you to stay plugged in during long editing sessions. Additionally, the use of more plastic in the chassis might not appeal to everyone, especially if you’re used to the aluminum build of a MacBook Pro.

In summary, the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2023) is a reliable tool for creative professionals. Its performance, display, and cooling system make it a great choice for photo and video editing. “The Asus ROG Strix G16 is a great all-round 16-inch gaming laptop, being powerful, exceptionally stylish and packed with useful features.” [Dominic Bayley, PCWorld]

PROS CONS
➕ Powerful Intel Core i9 processor and RTX 4070 GPU for heavy-duty editing. ➖ More plastic in the build, which might not appeal to all users.
➕ 16-inch FHD display with high refresh rate and excellent color accuracy. ➖ Average battery life, requiring frequent charging during intensive tasks.
➕ Ample memory and fast storage for efficient multitasking.
➕ Advanced cooling system for sustained performance.
➕ MUX Switch with Advanced Optimus for optimized battery life.

For graphic designers seeking a device that effortlessly handles the intricacies of creative work, the LG Gram 16” might just be the perfect MacBook replacement. It’s lightweight yet powerful enough to run my favorite graphic design apps with ease.

The LG Gram, equipped with Intel’s 13th Gen Core i7 processor and Intel Iris Xe graphics, was incredibly effective for my graphic design tasks. It handled software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator smoothly, allowing for seamless rendering of high-resolution images and complex designs.

The 16″ WQXGA Non-Reflective IPS Display, with its DCI-P3 99% color gamut, was a helpful feature. I recall working on a branding project where color precision was crucial, and the LG Gram’s display reproduced the hues exactly as needed, ensuring the final design matched my vision.

With 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, the LG Gram offered ample space and speed, invaluable for working on large design files. The quick memory supported efficient multitasking, allowing me to switch between applications without lag. This was especially helpful during tight deadlines when working across multiple design platforms simultaneously.

The lightweight design of the LG Gram was a significant advantage. As someone who often worked remotely, the ease of carrying this laptop around was a relief. However, there were areas where the LG Gram could have improved. The audio performance was average, therefore I had to use external speakers. The presence of bloatware was a minor annoyance, though it was not a deal-breaker as I removed it. The keyboard, while functional, could have been more comfortable for long hours of design work.

In summary, the LG Gram 16” Lightweight Laptop was a stellar choice for graphic designers. Its blend of performance, display quality, portability, and connectivity made it a versatile and reliable laptop for a wide range of graphic design tasks.

4. Dell XPS 17 9720 Laptop 2023 Best MacBook Alternative for Drawing

Dell XPS 17

Best touchscreen laptop similar to MacBook Pro for digital art

OS: Windows 10 Professional | Display: 17″ UHD+ Touchscreen | CPU: 12th Intel Core i7-12700H | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 | RAM: 32GB DDR5 | Storage: 2TB NVMe SSD

When it comes to drawing and digital art, I prefer a touchscreen display in a laptop as it allows me to engage effectively with my artwork. And though Apple is rumored to be working on a touchscreen laptop, there still isn’t any. So, during my search for a MacBook-level touchscreen laptop, I came across the Dell XPS 17 9720 Laptop (2023).

From the moment I unboxed the Dell XPS 17, its 17″ UHD+ touchscreen captivated me. The precision and responsiveness of the touchscreen were evident as I used my stylus for sketching. The fluidity with which the screen registered every stroke was like painting on a traditional canvas, but with the perks of digital technology.

The laptop’s power is another aspect that left a lasting impression on me. Equipped with a 12th Intel Core i7-12700H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, it handled my most demanding graphic design software with ease. I often work with complex layers and textures in my digital art, and the Dell XPS 17 managed these tasks without any lag.

Storage and memory are crucial for any artist dealing with large files, and the 32GB DDR5 RAM and 2TB NVMe SSD on the Dell XPS 17 were more than sufficient. I could store my extensive library of high-resolution images and artworks without worrying about running out of space or experiencing slow retrieval times.

Connectivity was seamless with the Thunderbolt 4 ports, allowing me to easily connect to external displays and other devices. However, the reliance on USB-C ports meant I had to keep a dongle handy for some of my older peripherals, a minor inconvenience but worth mentioning.

The build quality of the laptop is impressive, with its sleek aluminum and carbon fiber body, making it both durable and stylish. The backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader added to its functionality, making it a delight to use both in and out of my studio.

However, the 720p webcam was a bit of a letdown, especially for a laptop in this price range. As someone who occasionally streams art sessions, I had to rely on an external webcam for better quality.

All in all, the Dell XPS 17 9720 Laptop (2023) stands out as an exceptional choice for artists. Its combination of a superior touchscreen, robust processing power, and generous storage capacity renders it perfectly suited for drawing and sketching tasks.

PROS CONS
➕ Thunderbolt 4 ports for efficient connectivity. ➖Subpar webcam quality.
➕ Exceptional touchscreen for digital art. ➖ Limited port variety, requiring additional adapters.
➕ Powerful processor and graphics card for demanding software. ➖ With 5.3 Lb weight, it’s not easily portable
➕ Ample storage and memory for large art projects.

5. Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Best MacBook Alternative for Illustration

Best Windows alternative to MacBook Pro for Illustration

OS: Windows 11 pro | Display: 15.6 | CPU: Intel Core i7-1255U | Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics | RAM: 8 GB | Storage: 1 TB

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is another laptop I’ve found to be an excellent replacement for MacBook Pro, especially when it comes to illustration. Here’s what my experience with it has been like:

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5, with its 15.6″ FHD Touchscreen and accompanying stylus pen, makes it an ideal laptop for illustrators. During my time using it, the touchscreen’s sensitivity and accuracy were outstanding for detailed drawing and sketching.

One of the key features that impressed me was the PixelSense Flow display. The high resolution and vibrant visuals made colors pop, which is incredibly important when color accuracy in artwork is non-negotiable.

The 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1255U processor also proved its worth, handling multitasking with ease. Running multiple design applications like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop simultaneously was a smooth experience, with no noticeable lag or slowdown.

The integration of Dolby Vision IQ and Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Atmos added an extra layer of enjoyment to the illustration process. While these features are typically more entertainment-focused, they enhanced my overall experience, especially when working with multimedia content.

However, the Surface Laptop 5 isn’t without its limitations. Its limited upgradeability was a concern, but I found that choosing the right initial configuration can mitigate this issue. The device also tended to run hot on the bottom, which is a common issue in slim laptops. I used a cooling pad, which helped significantly during long drawing sessions. The limited ports were a minor inconvenience, but a USB hub or adapter easily solved this problem.

In conclusion, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is an excellent choice for illustrators. Its high-quality touchscreen, powerful processor and immersive audio-visual experience make it a versatile tool for various illustration tasks.

“Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 is, like its predecessor, a well-built laptop that prioritizes portability and a modern feature set. The construction looks and feels high quality, the screen looks nice, and the battery is long-lasting.” [Matthew Buzzi, pcmag]

PROS CONS
➕ Responsive touchscreen with high resolution for detailed artwork. ➖ Limited upgradeability.
➕ Powerful processor suitable for running demanding illustration software. ➖ Can run hot on the bottom.
➕ High-quality audio-visual experience with Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos. ➖ Limited port selection.

6. ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 Best Value Laptop Alternative to MacBook Pro

ASUS Zenbook Pro 15

Best value for money Mac Book Pro alternative

OS: Windows 11 Pro | Display: 15.6 inch 400 nits FHD OLED NanoEdge bezel touch display | CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 RAM | Storage: 1 TB PCIe NVMe SSD

For creative professionals looking for the best MacBook-like laptops without breaking the bank, the ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 is my top recommendation. And that’s not just for the appealing price point but also for the versatility, power, performance, and visual fidelity that it offers.

The moment I started using the ASUS ZenBook Pro 15, its 15.6” FHD OLED Touch Display left a lasting impression. The depth and vibrancy of colors on this screen were immediately noticeable. The ZenBook Pro’s display made it easy to fine-tune hues and contrasts, ensuring that the final product looked exactly as I envisioned.

The laptop’s performance, powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, was another highlight. It effortlessly handled my most demanding tasks, from high-resolution image editing to video rendering. The 16GB RAM and 1TB PCIe SSD provided ample space and speed for my projects.

The ErgoLift hinge and backlit keyboard were more than just comfort features– they enhanced my productivity. The hinge’s design, which elevates the keyboard, made long hours of work more manageable. The backlit keyboard was a godsend during late-night creative sessions, allowing me to work efficiently in low-light conditions.

However, the ZenBook Pro 15 wasn’t without its challenges. The battery life was a bit of a letdown, especially during intense work sessions away from a power source. I found myself scouting for outlets more often than I’d have liked. Also, the low-resolution webcam was not ideal for client meetings, leading me to invest in an external webcam for better video quality.

In summary, the ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 proved to be a formidable choice in my creative arsenal. Its exceptional display, robust performance, and thoughtful design elements made it a reliable laptop for various creative tasks.

PROS CONS
➕ Outstanding OLED touchscreen for color-intensive work. ➖ Subpar battery life.
➕ Robust performance with AMD Ryzen 9 and NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti. ➖ Low-resolution webcam.
➕ Ergonomic design with an adjustable hinge and backlit keyboard.
➕ Valuable 3-month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription for creative professionals.

7. SAMSUNG 15.6″ Galaxy Book3 The Best Budget MacBook Pro Alternative

Samsung Galaxy Book 3

Best non-Apple laptop on budget

OS: Windows 11 Pro | Display:  15.6 Inches | CPU: Intel Core i7-1355U | Graphics: Integrated | RAM: 16 GB | Storage: up to 2TB

The SAMSUNG 15.6″ Galaxy Book3 Business Laptop is another great choice on my list for those on a tight budget, but don’t be fooled by its price, as it has tons to offer.

Equipped with a 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor and Intel Iris Xe Graphics, the Galaxy Book3 provided ample power for most creative tasks. During my time with it, whether it was graphic design, video editing, or digital art, the laptop handled everything smoothly. I was particularly impressed with its performance while working on complex Photoshop projects, as it managed multiple layers and effects without any lag.

With 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, the Galaxy Book3 offered sufficient memory and storage for various creative applications. The SSD ensured quick boot times and fast access to files, which was beneficial when juggling between different projects and applications.

The build quality of the laptop, a mix of aluminum and plastic, gave it a decent feel, although it felt plasticky in areas like the suspension, hinges, and keyboard. The keyboard was compact, backlit, and included a numeric keypad and an integrated fingerprint reader in the power button, enhancing both functionality and security.

The 15.6″ matte IPS display, with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, was adequate for most tasks, but it covered only 60% of the sRGB color scale and exhibited some white point shifting at different angles. This limitation in color accuracy became apparent when working on color-critical tasks. The audio quality was acceptable, with good stereo and balance, though it lacked detail and depth in sound.

The laptop offered a good range of ports, including two USB Type-C and two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, and a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone port, along with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. This range of ports was useful for connecting various peripherals needed in my creative workflow.

In conclusion, the SAMSUNG Galaxy Book3 Business Laptop was a solid choice for creatives looking for a budget-friendly yet capable laptop. Its performance, storage, and connectivity made it suitable for a variety of creative tasks.

PROS CONS
➕ Powerful Intel Core i7 processor and Intel Iris Xe Graphics. ➖ Build feels plasticky in certain areas.

➕ Compact, backlit keyboard with integrated fingerprint reader.
➕ Good range of connectivity options.

8. Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop Best MacBook Alternative for Typography

Acer Nitro 5

Best alternative to MacBook Pro for writers

OS: Windows 11 Home | Display: 15.6” Full HD IPS Display with a 144Hz refresh rate | CPU: Intel 12th Gen i7-12650H | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU | RAM: 16GB DDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD

The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop is a spectacular choice for typographers. Despite its gaming-oriented model, my experience with this laptop revealed its potential as a powerful device for typography and other creative niches.

The Acer Nitro 5 is equipped with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12650H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. This combination provides more than enough power for typography software, which often requires handling high-resolution graphics and complex vector designs. I found this particularly useful when working with intricate font designs, where the laptop handled rendering and real-time previews without any hiccups.

One of the standout features for me was the 15.6” FHD 144Hz IPS display. The high refresh rate might seem overkill for typography, but it ensures smooth scrolling and crisp visuals, which is essential when working on detailed typographic layouts. The color accuracy and clarity of the display were beneficial for ensuring that the designs looked consistent across different mediums.

With 16GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB Gen 4 SSD, the Acer Nitro 5 offers ample memory and storage space. This was particularly advantageous when dealing with large design files and ensured that the laptop could handle multiple applications simultaneously without any performance issues.

However, there are some drawbacks to consider. The build quality of the Acer Nitro 5 is middling, and it may not feel as premium as some of its competitors. Additionally, while the laptop is equipped with a powerful GPU, it falls short of 60fps in most high-end gaming scenarios, which might be a concern for those who plan to use it for gaming as well.

In conclusion, the Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop is an excellent choice for typographers and creatives in various niches. Its powerful processor, high-quality display, and ample storage make it a versatile tool for a wide range of creative tasks.

PROS CONS
➕ Suitable for a range of creative applications beyond typography. ➖ Middling build quality.
➕ Ample memory and storage for large design files. ➖ Falls short of 60fps in high-end gaming scenarios.
➕ High refresh rate display for smooth visuals.

Best animation Windows laptop that is comparable to MacBook Pro

OS: Windows 11 Home | Display: 17.3″ QHD 240Hz | CPU: 13th Gen Intel Core i9 | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 | RAM: 32 GB DDR5 | Storage: 1 TB NVMe SSD

For animators, finding a laptop that can handle the demanding nature of animation software while also providing a high-quality display for accurate color representation is a significant challenge. This is why I selected the MSI Stealth 17 Studio 17.3 Laptop

The heart of the MSI Stealth 17 Studio is its 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processor, coupled with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 GPU. This combination provided me with the necessary power to run demanding animation software like Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects smoothly. I particularly appreciated the seamless rendering and real-time playback capabilities when working on complex 3D models and animations.

The 17.3″ QHD display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut was also amazing. The high refresh rate ensured smooth motion in animations, and the wide color gamut offered accurate color representation, which is crucial for detailed animation work. I found this especially useful when color grading and fine-tuning the visual details of my animations.

With 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD, the laptop offered ample memory and storage. This was beneficial for handling large animation files and ensured that the system remained responsive even under heavy workloads. The fast data transfer speeds, thanks to Thunderbolt 4, were a significant advantage when transferring large files or connecting to high-speed external storage.

The laptop’s design, featuring a black sand-blasted metal chassis, was both stylish and durable. The reinforced hinge was a thoughtful addition, ensuring the screen stayed in place during intense work sessions.

However, there were some limitations. The laptop’s battery life was not particularly long, which is a common issue with high-performance laptops. I often found myself tethered to a power outlet during long animation sessions. Additionally, the laptop’s weight and size made it less portable than some of its competitors.

In conclusion, the MSI Stealth 17 Studio 17.3″ QHD 240Hz Gaming Laptop is an excellent choice for animators. Its powerful processing capabilities, high-quality display, and ample storage make it well-suited for animation and other creative tasks.
