You might think that choosing a chair for your standing desk would be an easy proposition but it can be more difficult than you imagine. Lucky for you, we have put in the time to figure out exactly what you should look at before buying your next standing desk chair.
Armrest and Backrest
Shopping for standing desk chairs depends significantly on your preference. Many standing desk chairs don’t come with an armrest or backrest, simply because they’re mostly designed for sitting on over short periods.
That factored in, one thing to consider is how long you or others will sit on these chairs. If they’re meant for the office, you may want to consider a backrest at least. Comfortability is crucial when it comes to pieces of furniture like these.
Length and footrest
A great standing desk chair lets you stretch both your legs and back when you need to. As if you want to stand up and rely only on the stool for your body weight, standing desk chairs should feel sturdy and comfortable.

As such, you’ll want to consider how far it can stretch. Usually, stools and standing desk chairs can extend heights of up to 10 inches from when they’re fully folded. Many also come with a footrest to accommodate those who find it convenient to be able to place their feet on the base of the chair without touching the ground.
Material
Apart from the sturdiness of metal (or plastic) that holds together the entire standing desk chair, you’ll want to consider if a stool comes with cushions, fabric, padded seats, or otherwise. Furthermore, mesh seats are preferred in home offices, too, as these allow the air to circulate a lot more freely, allowing your back to enjoy a stable breeze wherever your air conditioner or fan is placed. While there isn’t only one version of the best standing desk chair, what matters most is what you prefer and find comfortable to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standing desk chair?
A standing desk chair, also known as a leaning stool or sit-stand stool, is a specialized seating solution designed for individuals who work at standing desks. It serves as a supportive and ergonomic companion to a standing desk setup. Unlike traditional chairs that encourage prolonged sitting, a standing desk chair allows users to maintain a partially seated and partially standing posture.
Are standing desks good for your neck?
Yes, standing desks are great because they allow you to take a rest from standing without allowing your posture to sag, making it a great choice to reduce your neck and lower back pain.
Which posture relieves the least amount of strain on your back?
We put the least amount of pressure possible on the discs between vertebrae when our back is in its optimum posture, which is when we are either resting flat or standing up straight. Close to 50% more pressure is applied to these discs when we sit and causing the back to curve than when we are standing.
