Being graphic designers ourselves, we feel a tablet is a game-changer for us. Unlike traditional mediums, like pen and paper or paint and canvas, tablets allow artists to easily create digital art. Tablets offer a range of benefits, including the ability to undo mistakes, experiment with different brushes and effects, and work more efficiently.

Anyone in graphic design, digital illustration, or any other visual arts field can benefit from a tablet. Whether you’re a professional artist looking to upgrade your equipment or a student just starting, a tablet can help you take your work to the next level. They are also great for hobbyists who want to explore their creative side.

There are many reasons to consider investing in a tablet for graphic design. For starters, tablets offer a more intuitive and natural drawing experience than a mouse or trackpad. With pressure-sensitive styluses, you can achieve precise and realistic strokes, and zooming in on your work allows for greater accuracy. Additionally, tablets provide a more comfortable and ergonomic way of working than hunching over a desktop computer.

Our Selection Criteria

We’ve compiled this list of the best tablets for graphic design, drawing, and art based on various criteria. We’ve included such factors as screen size, resolution, color accuracy, pressure, sensitivity, and price.

We have also considered the operating system and compatibility with popular design software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

We understand the importance of quality display-pen experience when it come to graphic design or drawing. With that said, we might have found just the right tablet that can keep up with the precision and flow of your hand, the Wacom Cintiq 16.

In terms of display, this Wacom tablet packs a 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 HD display that’s pretty solid for its price. Besides this, the scratch-resistant, anti-glare surface also ensures you can focus on your work without any pesky distractions.

To add to that, the Wacom Pro Pen 2 helps take your drawing experience to new heights. With a whopping 8,192 pressure levels, tilt response, and virtually lag-free tracking, you’ll feel like you’re back in art school, working with traditional pen and paper. Plus, the two customizable switches on the pen make accessing your favorite shortcuts a breeze.

Similarly, in terms of memory and capacity, the Wacom Cintiq 16 packs a punch with its 16 GB RAM and 512GB storage. This means, you’ll be able to run your favorite graphic design software without any hiccups. And also save all your projects, reference images, and resources without needing to transfer files to an external drive constantly.

When it comes to ergonomics, the Cintiq 16 has foldable legs, allowing you to adjust the tablet to your preferred working angle. Moreover, connecting to your computer has never been easier, thanks to the 3-in-1 HDMI connection cable.

Coming to its underwhelming aspects, the 5-hour battery life might leave you reaching for the charger or power bank during those creative marathons. And while it may not have all the bells and whistles of higher-end models, like multi-touch functionality, it’s still a fantastic option for the budget-conscious designer.

All in all, the Wacom Cintiq 16 is the perfect companion for graphic designers who want a high-quality, affordable pen display tablet that’s both reliable and comfortable and our pick for the best tablet for graphic design in 2024.

PROS CONS
➕ Budget-friendly without sacrificing quality ➖ 5-hour battery life may require frequent charging

➕ Wacom Pro Pen 2 for an ultra-precise, natural drawing experience

The best value drawing pad with no screen for designers

Size: 320 x 208 x 12 mm | Active drawing area: 8.7 x 5.8in | Pen pressure sensitivity: 8,192 levels | Connections: USB, Bluetooth | OS: Windows or macOS

Wacom Intuos Pro (Medium) is a professional-grade mid-sized drawing tablet, perfect for artists, designers, and photographers.

Designed to provide a natural drawing experience, with its high-resolution screen, minimalist pressure-sensitive pen, and customizable express keys, we consider this tablet to be one of the best tools for digital art, graphic design, and photo editing.

Useful for artists, designers, and photographers who want to work digitally, and anyone who wants to take their traditional art to the next level by combining it with digital techniques.

We consider this tablet perfect for those who want to create complex designs, illustrations, or photo retouching with the utmost precision and control, while also being lightweight and portable.

As professional graphic designers ourselves, we found this tablet’s features to be incredibly powerful. Its high-resolution screen really stood out for us and its pressure-sensitive pen made for a natural drawing experience.

We found the customizable express keys super handy to access frequently used commands and shortcuts which saved us a ton of time and increased our productivity.

Its multi-touch gestures made navigating and zooming in and out of our images easy and intuitive but did take some getting used to. We found the premium accessories to be high-end, especially the beautiful pen stand, nibs, and carrying case. For something a bit less premium, you could try the XP-Pen 15.6.

In our opinion, we consider the Wacom Intuos Pro (Medium) to be a top choice for digital art, graphic design, and photo editing.

We especially loved the high-resolution screen and pressure-sensitive pen mode when we were drawing, which felt like a very natural drawing experience, just like on paper.

For those of you on the go, you will appreciate the lightweight portable nature of the tablet. Overall, we think this tablet would be a great investment for anyone who wants to take their digital art and design to the next level.

What We loved

What We didn’t

➕ You will get a sketchbook feel ➖ Touchscreen and pen don’t work smoothly together
➕ Multiple ports for easy connectivity ➖ Limited shortcut keys
➕ Finger gesture support

Best iPad for graphic design

RAM: 8 GB | Storage: 128 GB | Screen Size: 12.9″ | Battery: 10 hours

If you’re looking for a powerful, portable, and versatile tablet that can revolutionize your workflow, the Apple iPad Pro is an all-round package for you. With the stunning 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR display featuring ProMotion, True Tone, and P3 wide color, you can view your designs in breathtaking detail and accurate colors.

The M2 chip, boasting an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, delivers enough power to tackle the most complex projects. You’ll also appreciate the 12MP Wide and 10MP Ultra Wide cameras, perfect for capturing reference materials and incorporating AR elements into your work. Plus, the 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage ensures you look great during video calls.

And you’re going to love it for its Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) compatibility. The precision and responsiveness of the stylus make it a joy to use for sketching, painting, and vector work. The fact that it charges wirelessly and attaches magnetically to the tablet is just icing on the cake.

Plus, with 128 GB of storage, you’ll have a decent amount of space to store your files and projects. And with a battery life of up to 10 hours, you can work for extended periods without worrying about finding a power outlet.

However, it’s important to note the Apple iPad Pro comes with a premium price tag, especially when you factor in the cost of the Apple Pencil and a keyboard. Additionally, the tablet’s software compatibility might be limited compared to traditional laptops.

But these minor drawbacks are not a complete deal-breaker, especially if you factor in Apple’s flagship processing power. That makes the Apple iPad Pro M1 an outstanding choice for Graphic Designers who value power, portability, and a top-notch display. This also gets our pick for the best tablet for graphic design and video editing.

PROS CONS

➕ Excellent stylus support with Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) ➖ USB-C port may require adapters for some peripherals

How We Selected and Tested the Best Tablets for Graphic Designers and Architects

To provide you with the best recommendations for tablets suitable for graphic designers and architects, we followed a comprehensive and tailored Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Our selection and testing processes were designed specifically with the needs and preferences of professional graphic designers in mind.

Selection Process

Our selection process involved multiple steps to ensure that we considered all relevant factors and found the best tablets for graphic designing tasks. Here’s a detailed overview of our selection process:

1. Researching Tablets

We began by compiling a list of top tablets in the market that cater to the needs of graphic designers and architects. For this, we considered factors like performance, portability, and stylus support in our search.

2. Comparing Specs

We created a comparison chart to highlight the specifications and unique features of each tablet on our list. This allowed us to narrow down our options based on professional requirements and preferences.

3. Considering Different OS

We focused on tablets running macOS or Windows, as these operating systems support essential graphic design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate.

We went through user reviews on tech websites, forums, and e-commerce platforms, and consulted expert opinions from industry professionals. This helped us gain insights into each tablet’s performance, reliability, and suitability for design work.

Testing Process

After selecting the tablets based on our rigorous selection process, we conducted a thorough testing process that focused on various aspects crucial to graphic designers and architects:

1. Display

We tested the display quality, focusing on factors like color accuracy, resolution, brightness, and viewing angles. Plus, we used display testing software and colorimeters to ensure precise results.

2. Performance

We ran graphic design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate to test each tablet’s performance. Then, we evaluated the tablets for smooth multitasking, responsiveness, and rendering times.

3. Stylus and Keyboard

We evaluated the compatibility, performance, and ease of use of each tablet’s stylus and keyboard or keyboard cover. For this, we focused on precision, pressure sensitivity, and typing experience.

4. Connectivity

We tested the connectivity options of each tablet, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, and HDMI. Then, we assessed the ease of transferring files and connecting to peripherals like external displays and input devices.

5. Battery Life

We monitored each tablet’s battery life during testing, taking note of how long they lasted under various workloads, including graphic design tasks and general usage.

6. Build Quality and Durability

We examined each tablet’s build quality and durability, paying attention to their resistance to wear and tear, potential for screen damage, and overall longevity.

7. Software Compatibility

We confirmed the compatibility of each tablet with the required design software, as well as any additional applications Alex may use for video conferencing or entertainment.

Through this meticulous selection and testing process, we ensured that our recommendations meet the unique requirements of professionals. So, the tablets we suggest are not only high-performing and reliable but also tailored to enhance the workflow of graphic designers and architects.

How to Choose the Best Drawing Tablet for Graphic Design

How to choose the right graphics tablet

Are you still uncertain about which is the right drawing tablet for you? Review the buying guide below and choose wisely.

✅ Go with (at least) 6GB RAM for Smooth Multitasking and Performance

A tablet’s performance is crucial for graphic designers, as you will be using resource-intensive software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate. So ensure the tablet you choose has a powerful processor, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon.

Though 4GB RAM is enough to run most applications, we still recommend investing in a tablet with at least 6 GB RAM or more like in the Microsoft Surface Pro X for smoother multitasking and better overall performance.

✅ At least a Screen with 1920 x 1200 for Accurate Visuals

The screen size and quality play a significant role in graphic design work. Look for a tablet with a high-resolution screen like the SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab S7 FE for detailed design work. In terms of size a 10-inch screen is large enough for most graphic design tasks without sacrificing portability. But if you prefer a larger display go for a tablet with a 12+ inches of display.

Also consider tablets with accurate color reproduction and wide color gamut support, as color accuracy is vital when working on design projects.

✅ Stylus Support for Precise Drawing and Sketching

A stylus is an essential tool for graphic designers, as it allows for precise drawing and sketching on the tablet. Choose a tablet with built-in stylus support or compatibility with popular third-party styluses like the Apple Pencil or Samsung S Pen. The stylus should have pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition, and low latency for an optimal drawing experience.

✅ Ample Storage for your Design Files and Software

As a graphic designer, you will need ample storage for your design files and software. Although 64GB is enough to get you going, we recommend considering a tablet with at least 128GB of storage like the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro to avoid running out of space quickly. Some tablets also offer expandable storage options via microSD cards, which can be a convenient way to increase storage capacity.

✅ Extended Battery Life for Long Working Sessions

Battery life is essential for graphic designers who work on the go or have limited access to power outlets during the day. We recommend choosing a tablet with at least 8 hours of battery life like the iPad Pro 6th Gen to ensure you can complete your tasks without worrying about recharging.

✅ Compatible Operating System for Software

Choose a tablet with an operating system that supports your preferred graphic design software. Windows offers a wide range of design software options, while Android and iOS have more limited selections. So ensure the tablet’s operating system is compatible with the specific software you need for your work.

✅ Variety of Connectivity Options

As a graphic designer, you will need to transfer files between devices and connect to peripherals like external monitors, keyboards, or drawing tablets. Look for tablets with a variety of connectivity options, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, and HDMI. These will allow you to connect to various devices and transfer files quickly and easily.

✅ Durable Build Quality

A high quality drawing tablet with a durable build quality is essential, as it will likely be frequently used and transported. Look for tablets with a sturdy design and materials that can withstand daily wear and tear.

✅ Support for Keyboard and Trackpad

If you plan to use your tablet for typing tasks or general navigation, consider a tablet with a compatible keyboard or keyboard cover. This will enable you to type comfortably and efficiently when working on documents or emails. Compatibility with external mice can further enhance your productivity and make it easier to navigate design software.

Type of Drawing Tablets: Graphics tablets vs Pen displays vs Tablet computers

For many artists, the choice of tablet typically resulted in either a graphics tablet or pen display. With the advancements in tablets like the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, they have provided artists another avenue to create amazing work. Let’s take a closer look at each option.

Tablets for Graphics Design

A graphics tablet features a flat, plain surface that you use a stylus to draw on, with the image being displayed on your computer monitor. While these remain the best budget-friendly option, their downside is that they can give a user a feeling of disconnection between the tablet and the monitor although many will become accustomed to this quite easily.

Pen Displays

A pen display is a flat-screen monitor that has a pressure-sensitive surface you draw on using a stylus. Unlike graphics tablets, users don’t experience the disconnect that can happen. They are also better at portability and do cost relatively more. There do tend to be a lot more cables between the display and monitor than with a graphics tablet, and for some, a pen display doesn’t provide the same feeling that a graphics tablet does.

Tablet Computers

A tablet computer such as the Apple iPad Pro or Samsung Galaxy Tab does things that the other two options don’t. With a tablet computer, you don’t need to connect to an external monitor or use another computer. Simply download the art app you want and start creating. While the price can range from affordable to super expensive, they are portable and a great combination of the features of both other options.

What are you using your tablet for?

Like any other purchase, buying a graphics tablet can be quite an investment. Making sure that you know what you’re looking for before buying can help you narrow down your choices so you get exactly what you need. To help narrow down your choices, you should ask yourself questions such as the following:

  • Are you a student in college with a limited budget but still need a good quality tablet?
  • Are you a professional graphic designer looking to take the next step in your career and upgrade your tech?
  • Are you looking for a standalone option or maybe a tablet computer so you can save space without extra cables and equipment?

The answers to these questions will help you pick the right option that meets your needs and your budget.

Do graphic designers need a tablet?

Having a graphic tablet as a designer is an option but not a requirement. Tablets offer a more natural way for designers to draw and interact vs just using a mouse or a touchpad. They are particularly useful for illustrators.

What’s your budget look like?

No matter what you’re buying, at some point, it always comes down to what you’re able to spend. Graphics tablets can vary greatly in price from $20 up to $3000. This doesn’t mean that if you can’t afford to spend $3000 on a graphics tablet, then all you’ll be able to get is bargain-basement products. There are quite a few tablets that are of excellent quality for less than $100.

If you do spend less, you will have to compromise on the active area the tablet has. Generally, the more expensive a tablet is, the larger area it comes with.

Does it work with your OS/software?

While you could find the perfect tablet that checks off all of your boxes from features to price and everything in between, if it only runs on macOS and you own a Windows PC, there’s nothing that will get them to work together.

While the majority will work with both, some will only work with one or the other. Compatibility with the software you use is important to check as well. Again, most of the major design software names such as Photoshop, Corel, and others will be supported but it doesn’t hurt to double-check.

Do you have enough real estate?

No, we’re not talking about the land in your backyard. When it comes to tablets, there will generally be two important measurements:

  • The size of the overall tablet
  • The size of the active area, i.e. the area you’ll be drawing on

Considering both when choosing a tablet is important. There are small, portable tablets that come with a large amount of drawing surface and the larger the drawing area the graphics tablet comes with, the more comfortable you will be using it.

Apple Pencil

EMR Styluses

EMR styluses use low energy levels that are generated by the pen’s circuits which react with the active area on the tablet. They tend to be thinner than battery-operated styluses and have a thicker point. On the other hand, a battery-operated stylus is designed with a finer point and made to be used for pen-to-tablet drawing.

On-screen Monitor or Flat Models

When you’re looking to buy a tablet to use for your projects, you’re going to run into one of two basic tablet designs. Flat and on-screen monitor models. Now, obviously there can be a price difference between the two of them, but which one is better for you generally comes down to personal preference. The LPI (lines per inch) for an on-screen tablet will generally be the same as the LPI for a flat model tablet.

For some though, using a flat model can take some getting used to. Drawing on a tablet while looking at your monitor or laptop screen can be discombobulating at first, while those who prefer drawing on an on-screen tablet are comfortable drawing right on the screen as they do not have any other option.

Pressure Sensitivity

A drawing tablet typically isn’t something that someone would buy unless they need it for a specific purpose such as drawing, illustrating, or graphic design work. The one that is ultimately chosen has many things considered, but one of the most important is the table sensitivity. Everyone has a different drawing or illustration style. Depending on yours, you may want to choose a tablet with an ultra-sensitive and responsive surface.

Another major factor is the pressure sensitivity, although this is a hardware issue for the tablet. Pressure levels on tables start at about 300 levels of pressure and go up to around 3000. In this case, the higher the number, the more responsive the tablet will be for you. For illustrations and design work, the optimal pressure level to look for on a tablet is in the 1024 range.

Resolution

If you work in a field where you need to make very high-resolution images that also have very sharp graphics, picking a tablet with a high LPI would be best suited for you. Think of LPI the same way that people think of 4K resolution found on televisions and computer monitors. With 4K resolution, the image on the screen is as bright and sharp as it can be, and a higher LPI can provide the same effect on a tablet.

Scrollers

Moving around the screen on your tablet using the stylus to get around or even your finger could cause mistakes to be made on your project, meaning you’d have to spend more time fixing errors and not meeting your deadline. Thankfully, many tablets have a scroller built into the tablet already. This will help you move around the project quickly without unforeseen errors occurring.

Wireless or Wired

Like the tablet you choose, whether you decide to use a tablet that is wireless or wired is a personal choice. While a wired tablet keeps you at your desk and doesn’t give you the freedom of movement that a wireless tablet may, it will give you a direct connection to your workspace or monitor.

Wireless tablets have become a default choice for a lot of graphic designers. The freedom that it gives you to move around without accidentally pulling on the cord and possibly damaging the tablet is beneficial. However, with a wireless tablet, you’re reliant on having a good connection to your monitor or workspace, which may not be as secure.

A great stylus pen for just about anything

The Jot Pro from Adonit features an etched aluminum body that makes it appear more expensive than it is but doesn’t let the affordable price fool you this is a surprisingly good stylus. Available in four colors, the Jot Pro 3 comes with a magnetic cap for protection.

1 thought on “20+ Best Tablets for Graphic Design, Drawing & Art 2024”

  1. Hello! This is an awesome post like always, the factors listed are indeed the important ones and all factors I took into consideration when picking a tablet for my work. And as now a really happy owner of a Star06 by XP-Pen(Wireless version), however, I realized that the image of it shown in the post actually seems to resemble more the Star03 Model. It is easy to spot because the description of the Star06 under the image states that it has a wheel and 6 hotkey buttons, while it is clear in that Screenshot that the tablet has 8 hotkeys and no wheel, exactly like the Star03 model. Other than that a great post like always! Keep up with the good work!
