For our anniversary I surprised Emily with a three day getaway to South Beach, Miami – one of our favourite getaway destinations and where we first exchanged the words “I love you”.

I  secretly arranged with her boss to get the Friday off, so we flew out that Friday morning. We stayed at one of her favorite hotels, The Perry (previously The Gansevoort), and we enjoyed the many amenities it had to offer, most notably the rooftop pool. We went to our favorite nightclub, LIV, to see LMFAO play live and on the following day, dined at our favourite restaurant Barton G, known for their over-the-top meals, iPad menus and romantic outdoor seating.

Everything seemed to be going to plan, and Sunday seemed like an ideal time to propose, however Hurricane Debby had other ideas. We were kept inside by torrential rain and wind, so I called the proposal off, with the ring still hidden in my pocket.

We went back to New York on Sunday afternoon, relaxed and happy, but not engaged.

I was determined to make this happen and Monday seemed like the perfect time to try again. Monday was our true anniversary day, so I arrived home early and decked out our apartment with roses, candles and fairy lights. We both exchanged anniversary gifts, had dinner and was soon off to sleep. Just before falling asleep, I mentioned that I had another surprise.

I turned off the light, told her to close her eyes, got the ring and came back into the room. I got down on one knee, turned on the bedside lamp and simply asked her “Will you marry me?”. After about fifteen seconds of staring at me like a stunned rabbit, she burst into tears, grabbed me and said “Yes!”.

We reflected on reality for a while and then stayed up into the wee hours of the morning calling family & friends, as well as responding to the Facebook notification frenzy.

From here, I very much look forward to spending our lives together, getting used to the word ‘fiancé’ as well as designing all of the wedding collateral.

On that topic, do you have any tips or suggestions for weddings / invites / etc.? Pinterest’s wedding section has been great so far.

  1. Congrats Jacob! My proposal was similar as far as plans falling through because of weather, proposing in bed seemed to be just as romantic though. Enjoy it! Your wedding day will be here sooner than you know:)

  2. Congratulations Jacob,

I’m getting married next Friday and one tip I can give you is to start planning early. There are plenty of Apps for your phone to keep track of when things have to be done to be ready on that special day. Another thing is to make sure to inform people from out of town as early as possible so they can make plans as well. And stay calm through all that!

I’ve used pre-made Wedding stationary sets and designed my invitations/route sheets/reply cards myself. I just remembered, I still got to make the schedule of events sheet…got to go…

  3. Congrats mate! Sounds like a good story!

We made a website for our invites where guests could login and select who can come and write messages. Worked quite well 🙂

Looking forward to seeing what ever you come up with!

  4. Hi Dude, I am your big fan and you are such an inspiration in my logo design and branding. Thanks for sharing each and every moment of your life, it helps me a lot!
By the way many, many congratulations! May God bless you Both. Cheers!

  5. Congrats! What a wonderful story! And creative too! I design handcrafted wedding stationery that tells YOUR story once it pops out of the envelope! I have written several articles on wedding stationery components and have one coming out soon on the wedding stationery timeline. Would love to chat with you if you need some more direction. Hopefully, you’ll find the Sage & Time Designs website helpful! Congrats again!

  6. Congratulations! Marriage is wonderful!

Planning advice: Try not to let family expectations dictate how your day goes. And try not to stress too much over one day either. It’s the lifetime that comes afterwords which needs the most attention/preparation.

  7. Congratulations! I go to the University of Miami, but I am in Korea for the summer.
LIV and the Perry are awesome place to experience Miami. Ahh I wish I was at LIV on Friday, maybe I could have had a chance to see Jacob in real life!

Next time you go to Miami, try Scarpetta at Fontainbleau (and LIV after). It’s delicious!!

    Congrats again!

  8. The award for marriage proposal of the year goes to…

Congratulations Jacob! Getting married is a great thing.I got married on 11-11-’11, and i had a beautiful day. I hoop you both have that same wonderful day as well. JUST ENJOY.

Ow btw, a funny thing is that it takes some time to get used to the word ‘wife’, cause you’re used to the word ‘girlfriend’. You’ll see ;D

  17. Hi Jacob, a longtime fan of yours and my first time commenting just to say congrats. Wishing you and your fiance the best of luck.

  18. Congratulations!

I read your blog regularly via gogle currents but this is the first time I’ve commented.

I designed our own wedding card in India a few years ago and I still love the fact that it is unique, handmade, represents both my husband and I and our taste and still had a bit of Indian tradition to it. It’s at the link… http://aratidevasher.blogspot.in/2009/03/wedding-card-arati-and-dhruv.html … There was another version for my husbands parents to send out, but I can’t find the images now and the actual cards are in storage, but it used the same motif and font but was more masculine in green, cream and gold.

Plan ahead and enjoy the day itself, don’t stress, it’s easier than it seems along the way.
